£40.00Chorale Prelude
This stately work is very loosely based on the opening chords from 'The Lamb', although there are no direct quotations from that work. The opening chorale is played as gradually more themes are added above in a dignified and legato subject where instruments sustain notes to give a lingering echo effect. Players need to be aware of their role in this to maximise the effect. The second subject increases the intensity until the time signature change introduces a second chorale. Then, a short imitative passage leads to a rising appogiatura theme and the climax of the work, which re-introduces the original chorale in a major tonality. With versions for brass ensemble, brass band, wind orchestra and woodwind orchestra, this work has been placed in concerts when a meaningful, reflective moment is required.

Dag Wiren (1905-1986) came to fame as a composer in 1937 with Serenade for string orchestra, Op. 11, which remains his most played work to date. His opus list is mainly instrumental music; five symphonies, five string quartets, several overtures and a lot of film and theatre music.He composed the stage music for William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, which was performed at Dramaten in Stockholm in 1944. The drama was performed again in 1961, somewhat revised by Wiren. From this production, Wiren compiled a concert suite that he called Romantic Suite, Op. 22.The fifth and final movement is Portia's Castle Orchestra, which is based on an Irish folk melody.This instrumentation for Brass Band is based on the arrangement for wind band by Jerker Johansson. The instrumentation was written for Askoy Brass Band's performance at Siddis Brass 2022.

This original piece is intended to performed by the youngest musicians. The structure of the overture is traditional A-B-A with a slow section in the middle flanked by two Modearo sections. As the title suggest, the piece is well suited as a concert opener but also for contest use. All parts challenges the young players in many ways, both the wind- and percussionists. Please be aware of the contrasts in dynamics throughout the piece.

£115.60Valdresmarsj - Johannes Hanssen
Valdres is a mountain region that lies between Oslo and Bergen. Johannes Hanssen (1874-1967) composed the march for the Valdres Battalion between 1901 and 1904, using the Battalions horn-signal combined with a traditional style folk-tune. The march has been named "one of the greatest marches in the world" on many occasions, and it is a firm favourite with it's national flavor and unusual style. This version is similar to Johannes Hanssens revised version for Wind Band from 1954. However, it is interesting to notice that in Hanssens very first version of the march half a century earlier, the first theme was played by the Eb-Cornet, just like in this arrangement for brassband.

Who can Sail without the Wind is an old folk tune from Aland in Finland. I believe the song was one of the first one I learnt to sing and play on the guitar. The melancholic character of the song is something I have brought with me ever since.

Benjamin Britten composed his Occasional Overture Op.38, for the opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29th September 1946, when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. It was notheard again until 1982, when the composer's Executors decided that it should be revived. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in this concise but exciting work, versions for brass band and wind band have been preparedfor Britten's centenary year. Brass Band Grade 6: Championship. Another World's Hell was commissioned in versions for brass, wind and fanfare bands by the Socit Cantonale des Musiques Vaudoises and the Association Cantonale des MusiquesNeuchteloises for the 2013 Swiss Cantonales festivals. It is inspired by a passage in Aldous Huxley's classic 1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World, which describes in unusually close detail themusic that is being played at a dance. The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea, there is no wind, the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante), the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. Hemay be proud of his flagship.

This piece originates as a piano piece written by the composer as he was convalescing after an illness and operation.In the music there is an outlet for emotions of uncertainty and doubt, but also of hope for the future. The piece was later arranged for wind and brass band, and premiered at a music summer camp in 2021.This piece has a melancholy character and suits bands looking for a piece to work on sound, phrasing, dynamics and expression.
