Previously only available in manuscript form, this euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment is now available in printed format. Euphony (meaning a pleasant, sweet sound) is based on the tunes of Sidney Cox with material taken from the songs; 'He found me', 'This one thing I know', 'You can tell out the sweet story' and 'Deep and wide'. At the time of writing, the composer remarked; 'The euphonium is often associated with melodies and harmonies that lend themselves to pleasing sounds'. That is true of this solo but it also presents considerable technical challenges for the soloist in terms of range and technique.

Is That The Time ? was written in 2014 for UK national award winning band 'Youth Brass 2000'. It's a showpiece in a jazzy fusion idiom with a full and central role for the kit drummer and percussionists. The temptation must be resisted to play the piece too quickly and in so doing losing the 16th note syncopations inherent within the rhythmic groove. The challenge is not so much one of getting the notes, although there are a few harmonic surprises along the way, as one of playing as a cohesive rhythmic unit.

Commissioned by The Norwegian Band Federation for The European Brass Band Championship 2003, in Bergen, Norway (Third edition) I remember as a kid the very early morning wake-up ceremonies caused by Seagulls having a "party" outside our home. Very few would describe it as beautiful, particularly not at 4:30 in the morning... But by listening carefully to birds I was fascinated by their diversity and musical language: they dont sing tunes or long phrases, they rather make sounds and signals, based on short motives. Aubade is based on musical pictures of the imaginary birds: the creatures with wings that exists only in myths and legends. The whole story starts with aBaritone-cadenza that evoke all the sleeping creatures. Very soon they all start to sing their songs in one way or another. The composition has a burlesque scherzo-character including slow espressive intersections. Traditional elements like melody and harmony is combined with extensive sounds and textural effects created by use of multiple muting, singing and playing at the same time. I am not too concerned about having a program for the piece. I just know that by thinking of the unheard dragon-songs, griffin-songs, the sound of the dodo, my creativity was stimultated. As a piece of music, Aubade follows its own rules based on well-known elements like melodies, arpeggio-figures, harmonies, rhythms, variations and recapitulation of ideas. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

A gentle solo for cornet with band accompaniment.Paseo is a Spanish word for a leisurely walk or stroll. The soloist takes the musical line for a walk with no great sense of hurry. There is one moment where the pleasantness of the stroll is threatened but it quickly passes and the good mood is resumed. Technically this needs a good sense of cantabile and control over the range from low D to D two octaves higher. In order to allow the soloist to sing through without fighting the accompaniment, cornets and percussion are omitted.Duration: 4.15

The fantasy called Christmas Day was originally written for mixed choir with orchestra or organ accompaniment. Robert van Beringen has arranged this work for concert band exactly 100 years later. ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this hymn meditation on the much-loved hymn by Adam D J Taylor. Commissioned by the world famous Wingates Band, this arrangement became a centrepiece of the band's online presence during the COVID pandemic. Story time... Horatio Spafford was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford's precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: "Saved alone. What shall I do?" Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll-- Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul. Rob Goorhuis wrote this challenging work for solo euphonium with its marvellous title The Seven Divine Properties at the request of Danny Oosterman and after an idea of Anteun Hoesen. In fact, this piece came about because the Andels Fanfare Corps was going to record a CD in early 2012 exclusively with pieces by Rob Goorhuis. Anteun Hoesen plays the solo part in this piece on the CD.The concept of divine properties features heavily in various ancient religions: these are properties to which man can aspire--through striving towards divine properties one can evolve spiritually and become a better person. Different divine properties feature in various religions. Inthe Christian church, the terms Faith, Hope and Love play an important role.This composition is primarily written from an Old Testament point of view. The chosen qualities are as follows: Simplicity, Strength, Truth, Perseverance and Passion. After a short introduction of the thematic material, the various properties are depicted in musical miniatures.

The Present Age (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Condon, Leslie
The present age' is almost a stock term familiar to Salvationists, stemming from the much-used verse - 'To serve the pres ent age .... ', which has expressed a purpose throughout Salvation Army history. It is, however , the present age of the late 1960's and 70's which claims the composer 's attention in this attempt to express in music the background against which the modem young Christian has to work. One pictures him with all the dash and impetuosity of youth setting out to 'turn the world upside down'. We here share with him reactions of his hearers, disappointments within himself, and a series of cameos depicting what kind of a world it is that he has pledged to win for Christ.
