£71.75Pyrenean Carol Suite (Brass Band) David Taylor
This attractive suite for brass band by David Taylor features five traditional carols from the Pyrenees region of Spain, as follows: i. Nadal Tindaire (Jingling Christmas) - Occitan traditional This Occitan Christmas song tells of musical instruments used to celebrate the Nativity - 'fifes and trumpets, timpani and pipes, or you, clear little bells, along with the angels' choir.' ii. Gabriel's Message (Birjina Gaztetto Bat Zegoen) - Basque traditional The most widely-known of the chosen carols, honouring Jesus's mother Mary, this is often sung in its English version, but the melody came from the Basque country. The Basque words were adapted from the Mediaeval song Angelus ad Virginem. Here, we feature the flugel horn. This movement was originally written on its own, with organ accompaniment, for the composer's wife, Diane Scott. iii. El Noi de la Mare (The Child of the Mother) - Catalan traditional A beautiful Catalan carol celebrating the birth of Jesus, telling of the tasty gifts that the singer would bring - 'Raisins and figs and nuts and olives; Raisins and figs and honey and mato [a Catalan dessert cheese traditionally served with honey.]' Here we feature the euphonium. The tune was made famous by guitarist Andres Segovia, who used it as a favourite encore, and by John Rutter, who made a widely-used setting for choir. iv. Paure Satan (Poor Satan) - Occitan traditional This rather unusual carol tells of the pain that Satan is put to by the arrival of the infant Jesus. Its mocking and sarcastic tone is reflected here, where the tuba soloist (as Satan) is given musical trouble throughout by the other parts. At first they conflict with the soloist, then the soloist makes overtures of friendship, which are treated with suspicion followed by contempt. The soloist finally gives in to their accompaniment (or do they?). There are plenty of opportunities for little theatrical touches here, if the tuba player is so inclined! The tuba part in this movement is notably more difficult than the rest of the music, and a number of optional changes have been marked to make the part easier to play, if so desired. The player is also welcome to add suitable extra embellishments to taste if they wish, within the character of the music. v. Fum, Fum, Fum! - Catalan traditional A favourite Catalan Christmas song for centuries, this rousing melody provides a fitting way to round off the suite, with its repeated rhythmic refrain of the nonsense title phrase. It tells of the Nativity, and then it tells of the celebratory feasting and good times that the singers look forward to to honour it. Although the suite is intended to be performed whole, it is also intended for usage with a selection of movements on occasions where a shorter piece is wanted. Suggested formats include a single movement alone (2, 3, and 5 are likely most appropriate), a pair of movements (any of the first four, plus 5), and a suite of three or four movements (1 and 5, plus one or two of 2, 3, or 4 in the middle). It is suggested that a good way to design a 'pick-your-own-suite' from the movements is to think of the earlier movements as introductory to the final movement. This rousing march by Dave Collins is a dedication to the remarkable group of volunteers - the unsung heroes - who, each year, organise and run the iconic Whit Friday brass band contests. They ensure that the heritage and tradition of this uniquely special event is not lost, preserving its ongoing and continued success. Its importance in the annual calendar to the players, supporters and spectators is vital to the Tameside and Saddleworth community. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work.The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. £35.87Gobsmacked! (Brass Band) Robbert Vos
VIEW SCORE PDF Gobsmacked was commissioned by Ravnanger Brass Band (Norway). The composer Robbert Vos writes: 'Gobsmacked is composed as an opening or encore piece which, as the title already reveals, is meant to surprise or overwhelm the audience! After a brief opening fanfare, the main theme is introduced by the solo cornet and euphonium. An accelerando leads to a quick movement, where this main theme is transformed into a con brio. In this section there's a lot of energy to be unleashed and every band member plays a roll in creating that. Throughout the piece there are many surprises, for example some unexpected time changes, percussion effects to wake you and some trombone glissandi to make you smile. After a short and atmospheric reminiscence by the flugel to the solos from the beginning of the piece, there comes a brief percussion interruption which leads to a reprise of the con brio, but this time in slightly different form. This all comes together in the finale where a big accelerando will lead to an exciting close.' This delightful German lullaby-carol first appeared in print in Samuel Scheidt's Tablaturbuch of 1650, though it may have been written before then, either by Scheidt himself or by an unknown author. J. S. Bach's version (in the form of a melody and figured bass) was included in Schemelli's Gesangbuch of 1736, and it is that which this arrangement for brass band by Andrew Wainwright is based on. This rousing fanfare prelude for Brass Band and optional Organ by Kenneth Downie is based on the monumental hymn Now thank we all our God, which dates from 17th century Germany. The arrangement is featured on the CD Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Symphonic Music of Kenneth Downie (available here) as a symphonic brass setting. The arranger writes: 'The depth of the words is underpinned by the grandeur of the music, so I have tried to reflect the same regal approach in my setting for brass band.' This highly descriptive and personal work for brass band is autobiographical, and based on a seven-year period of the composer Fendall Hill's life. He comments: "...external events had severe personal consequences, and my previously self assured self woke in the early mornings, way before my body wanted. My mind would fret, regret, and attempt to fix things beyond my control or powers, carving out an anxiety-shaped hole in my soul. This piece is an exploration of the sheer range of thought processes I went through, the mind dances I would perform to either calm myself back to sleep, or somehow come to terms with my situation. So often I would get to the point of mental exhaustion after phases of semi-calm, imagined alternate realities, and sheer panic. Your mind knows there is no benefit to worrying, but that doesn't stop the flow of emotions, the fear, and the anxiety." A rousing fanfare for brass and percussion, this work by Andrew E. Lawson was the winner of the prestigious Dallas Winds Fanfare Competition 2019. Here it is has been transcribed for brass band by Andrew Wainwright. The composer writes: 'In honor of the 1,177 crewman killed among the battleship USS Arizona, For Uncommon Valor is inspired by the story of the brave men, women, and children who witnessed, fought, and endured the tragic events of December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, and across the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The story of Pearl Harbor, however, does not end with a sunken battleship, or a defeated nation. A mighty nation, 'the sleeping giant', awoke to face the challenge at hand and claim victory for those who could not claim it for themselves. The uncommon valor displayed by the men and women of the Pacific Fleet brought forth the greatest fighting force ever seen and put on display for all to see, the strength and resilience of the American people.' £43.84Christmas Day (Brass Band) Gustav Holst arr. Philip Rayment
VIEW SCORE PDF Well-known English composer, Gustav Holst (1874-1934) wrote this choral fantasy in 1910, about five years before his renowned orchestral suite, The Planets. The piece was originally composed for SATB choir and orchestra and dedicated to the students of Morley College, where Holst taught music. In the years since, it has been arranged for various combinations of voice and/or instruments. This arrangement is in the original key and could be adapted for use with choir and/or organ. Christmas Day features three carols in their entirety: Good Christian Men, Rejoice; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Come, Ye Lofty, Come, Ye Lowly (an old Breton melody). There are also references to The First Nowell. Although well-received initially, this work (like many of Holst's) was neglected for many years and has not been widely recorded. It is hoped that it will be useful for brass bands during the festive season, particularly in a large acoustic. This upbeat, foot-tapping march by Welsh composer Jonathan Mead features the two well known Welsh tunes of Aberystwyth and God Bless The Prince of Wales. Aberystwyth is set as a big bold bass solo and careful attention will need to be paid to make sure that it sounds clean and together. God Bless The Prince of Wales first appears as a traditional hymn tune, before returning in a more vibrant, lively style, with florid scalic passages for the solo cornets and euphoniums. The march was written with St David's Day in mind, although will be an appropriate addition to concert programme throughout the year as either an opener or finisher.
