The Lure of the Red Jacket responds musically to these ideas and attitudes; a non-relenting riff that signifies the hard slog of practice, scorings which find members of the band supporting the soloist, all the time the soloist putting together new riffs and ideas. Stylistically all this happens within a frame of minimalism and funk. Far Beyond the Stars is a simple folk-like melody that is stated by the soloist, which develops with different harmonic backdrops being introduced. The poignant words form the focus of the emotional intensity of this piece. The Dragon's Den is a fierce and fiery fusion of energy, virtuosic playing and intricate ensemble work, the finale of the Concerto for Euphonium draws upon the composers experience of big band and small group performance and writing. Fantasy for Brassband and Organ Brass Band (Score & Parts)
When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderful sound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of "colouring". As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow - fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. The 1971 film musical Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory starred Gene Wilder in the title role. The music was written by composer/actor Anthony Newley, with lyrics provided by Leslie Bricusse, for which it received an Oscar nomination for Original Song Score. There are several well-known songs from the film, but perhaps the most famous is Pure Imagination, which is sung by Willy Wonka as the five children and their parents enter the Chocolate Room in Wonka's factory.
