A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, was based on what was a rather scandalous play by Pierre Beaumarchais, because the drama involves an incompetent nobleman being upstaged by a crafty, quick-witted servant named Figaro, in their quest for the same woman. The action takes place in just one day and offers a series of awkward and humorous situations, complete with a vibrant dialogue between the all the main characters.Voi Che Sapete is performed by Cherubino, who is about to be sent off to the army because the Count finds him a nuisance. When Cherubino appears before the Countess and Susanna to tell them of his fate, Susanna requests a love song. Duration: c.2'30"Dofficulty: Suitable for all grades

Runaway - Max Crook & Del Shannon - Len Jenkins
"Runaway" was made famous by Del Shannon in 1961 when it was released in the February of that year and quickly became an international hit. At its height it was said to be selling at the rate of 80,000 singles per day and in the June made number one in the UK. It was written with Max Crook who had invented his own clavioline-based electric keyboard called a Musitron which features in the original recording. The song was originally recorded in A minor, but the producer sped up the finished recording to just below B-flat minor. The iconic synthesiser sound in this arrangement is reproduced as a solo on Soprano cornet, and should be within the capabilities of most players provided attention is paid to the breathing regime.

Based on the traditional Spanish carol 'Riu Riu Chiu', this exciting foot-tapping item was premiered at Butlins Mineworkers Championships in 2010. Recorded on Virtuosi GUS Band's CD 'Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright', it has since proved to be a popular concert item. Three Carols was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic as part of their Holiday Brass series and was premiered at Avery Fisher Hall by the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass and Canadian Brass. Originally for 10 players, soon after the premiere I decided to score the piece for brass band. The brass band version was first performed by the New York Staff Band.Through the years I have been intrigued by carious carols from different countries and the challenge of creating musical treatments that sound fresh and original. When commissioned to write these brass arrangements, I wanted to create contrasting movements that could be performed either as a set or individually and thought that three carols from different countries would allow the opportunity for that contrast. The featured carols are the traditional Polish carol Infant Holy, What child is this? with lyrics by William Dix and set to the English folk song Greensleeves and the lesser-known Catalonian carol Cold December flies away.- Joseph Turrin

Deep River is a spiritual of Afro-American origin. It was used in the 1929 film version of "Showboat". The melody is also sung in the closing section of Michael Tippett's oratorio "A Child of our Time" and was also adapted into the popular song "Dear Old Southland". This fine arrangement by Mark Bassey was commissioned by Superbrass for their "Brass Taps" CD. Duration: 4.30. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above

Moonraker (1979) was the eleventh spy film in the James Bond series, and the fourth to star Roger Moore as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. Bond investigates the theft of a space shuttle, leading him to arch-villain Hugo Drax. Bond follows the trail from California to Venice, Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon rainforest, and finally outer space to prevent a plot to wipe out the world population and to re-create humanity with a master race. The magical title song was sung by Shirley Bassey. This superb arrangement by Darrol Barry features soprano cornet and is suitable for all levels of band.
