The African Connection Brass Band (Score & Parts)
Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblance to a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. The Alchymist's Journal (Variants for Brass Band) was commissioned by Faber Music Band Consultant Paul Hindmarsh in 2001, with the support of the Brass Band Heritage Trust, as a substantial concert/contest challenge that would be within the compass of the country's most able youth and first section bands. It received its first performance in January 2002, by Black Dyke Band under Nicholas Childs, as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass.Since its original publication, composer Kenneth Hesketh has made a number of revisions to the work. Most of these were included in the recording made by Foden's Band conducted by Bramwell Tovey. The Baron of Dedem once ruled over a large plot of peat in the Netherlands. 1809 saw the beginning of the construction of a canal to transport this fuel, so important in those days. The canal was named after the Baron, as was the nearby village. This work describes the establishment of the canal and the village, but also life in the region nowadays, thereby setting a slice of Dutch life to music.

As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloist's increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.

The Horn of Plenty Brass Band Tenor Horn Solo (Score & Parts)
The Horn of Plenty is a composition which allows to present the Horn in many styles. The opening has an heroic character and exudes an Spanish atmosphere. The next part is a playful and lighthearted Leggiero. The melody used in bar 38 has an oriental sound through melodic use of the harmonic scale. The Andante is a parody on a piano etude by the composer Stephen Heller, a Frenchman of Hungarian descent. The Irish Dancemaster Brass Band (Score & Parts)
During the eighteenth century a person called 'the Dance Master' made his appearance in Ireland. He was a travelling dance-teacher, who moved from one village to another to teach the people there how to dance. They were often flamboyant personalities, gorgeously dressed and holding a staff in one hand. In order to teach their pupils the difference between their right and left leg, the dance master used to tie a small bunch of straw or hay to their leg and then would order them to either lift their 'hay-leg' or their 'straw-leg'. The dancing masters used to stay in one particular village for about six weeks (if they were not claimed by a neighbouring village), after which they continued their journey. Having a famous dance master gave a village a certain distinction and did not seldom lead to boasting and pride. Also on account of the popularity of Celtic music in general at the moment, William Vean was inspired to writing 'The Irish Dance Master'. He 'teaches' you two dances, the Reel and the Jig. In between these two dances there is a short breathing space, during which a traditional Irish rhythm can be enjoyed. 03:15
