£35.00Symphonic Dance No.3 - Sergei Rachmaninov arr. Phillip Littlemore
Completed in 1940, the set of Symphonic Dances was Sergei Rachmaninov's last composition. The work is fully representative of the composer's late style with its curious, shifting harmonies, the almost Prokofiev-like outer movements and the focus on individual instrumental tone colours throughout. Rachmaninov composed the Symphonic Dances four years after his Third Symphony, mostly at the Honeyman Estate, 'Orchard Point', in Centerport, New York, overlooking Long Island Sound. The three-movement work's original name was Fantastic Dances, with movement titles of 'Noon', 'Twilight' and 'Midnight'. When the composer wrote to the conductor Eugene Ormandy in late August, he said that the piece was finished and needed only to be orchestrated, but the manuscript for the full score actually bears completion dates of September and October 1940. It was premiered by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, to whom it is dedicated, on 3rd January, 1941.This arrangement is of the last dance and is a kind of struggle between the Dies Irae theme, representing Death, and a quotation from Rachmaninov's own Vespers (also known as the All-night Vigil, 1915), representing Resurrection. The Resurrection theme proves victorious in the end as the composer actually wrote the word 'Hallelujah' at the relevant place the score (one bar after Fig. 16 in this arrangement). Ave Maria - Vocal or Instrumental Solo - Bach-Gounod - Bjorn Mellemberg
This great piece is a result of two outstanding composers creative ability. The French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) used the Prelude No. 1 from "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier" by Johann Sebasian Bach (1685-1750) and added a beautiful melody to the original piece. The composition has the occurred in several versions both with and without lyrics and for many kinds of instrumentations.To the Conductor:It's important to take well care of the long phrases of the melody and it's warm and soft character.Make shure that the band balance the three elements of melody, harmony and the rhythmic (played by the clarinets) well. All these three is of equial importance and depend of each other.

"Heaven in My Arms" is a beautiful melody by Carola Haggkvist with lyrics by Erik Hillestad.This version is without vocal soloist so the melody is spread into many parts throughout the arrangement.To the conductor:Strive for good flow and phrasing. Feel free to be a bit creative with the phrasing. It invites for two-bar phrases in the melody, but perhaps 2/2/4 could also work nicely.Balance is very important. Often there is both melody and obligato/countermelody in addition to harmonic elements. Let each of them have their own layer in the balance.Staccato effects in cornets and marimba are intended as pizzicato effects and must be phrased. Not too static.The tutti section at 72 can be energetic with intense lines. Maybe a little piu mosso as well. Think big and orchestral with good resonance and timbre.- Reid Gilje -

Abaddon was commissioned by the NLBB (Noord-Limburgse Brassband North Limburg Brass Band) from Belgium. Abaddon is the demon reigning over the underworld. In the New Testament in the Book of Revelation by John (9:11) he is calledthe angel of the bottomless pit. The work Abaddon lives up to its name. Technically and physically, it holds an enormous challenge for every band in the champions division. The composition has a traditional form structure (fast slow fast), and it consists of ornamentationsaround the letters IVAN, after Ivan Meylemans, the conductor who since 2001 has obtained great successes with the NLBB, and who in this case has also been essential in taming the demon in Abaddon.

It is important that energy and pace is upheld all the way up until the next to last page. Dissonances are present several places, but the voice leading is diatonic within the given scale.The whole piece is based on one single scale: F melodic minor with lowered second degree. It is notated as a concert F major scale with two accidentals. Feel free to use it during warm-ups!

This march was written in 1919 by Norways own March King Oscar Borg (1851-1930).He was born in the town of Halden in the southeast of Norway and received his education at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, Sweden.Upon his return to Halden he became a driving force in the towns musical life in several respects. He conducted choirs, amateur bands and played the organ in church.Borg was also the conductor of 1. Brigades Musikkorps (today The Norwegian Wind Ensemble) from 1881 to 1918.His significance for the Norwegian military bands and their repertoire is unquestionable.He wrote over 60 marches and he played several instruments; the violin, flute, cornet and the organ.This arrangement was written for Askoy Brass Band in 2021.Svein H.
