Sentinel - Peter Meechan
Sentinel was written in the summer of 2010 and follows on from another work by the composer, The Karman Line - a piece which describes the point where the earthas atmosphere ends and Outer Space begins.Sentinel goes further into space and takes the idea that the stars are somehow guardians of the sky that we can see, and Space further beyond.The opening section, which prominently features metallic percussion and broad melodies, portrays the grand open space that the stars inhabit. The middle, slower, section is more reflective depicting the isolation of Space, before we hear a reprise of the first section as the finale.Sentinel was written for the 2011 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

Three Spanish Impressions originally were part of a large, single movement work called " SPAIN" Whilst happy with the content of the work, I realised that it was rather unwieldy and a bit too long, so, with the publishers blessing, created a shorter suite from the existing material.The brooding and repetitive opening movement takes its mood perhaps from the Miles Davis/Gil Evans album "Sketches of Spain", albeit in a less stringent harmonic language. The middle movement is a delicate and fragile waltz, with shades of a romance within, and the finale, a colourful and robust fandango, also contains a lyrical heart!The thematic material, whilst written very much as a pastiche of the music of Spain, is original, and the accent is firmly on melody and musicianship!Alan FernieJune 2007

£9.95Second Quartet (Brass Quartet - Score and Parts)
My second Brass Quartet was written in 1968, immediately after I finished my studies at the Royal Academy of Music, and was in response to a request from my then publisher, R Smith & Co, to write some chamber music for brass band instruments. My Brass Quartet No 1 (also written in 1968) was scored for the usual combination of two cornets, horn and euphonium, but the second is scored for two horns, baritone, and tuba, giving the music a somewhat mellower sound world than the First Quartet. It is also a miniature in form in that it barely lasts six minutes. The music is in three movements: Prelude, Scherzo and Postlude. The outer movements are slow and thoughtful, while the middle Scherzo is rather astringent in character, with virtuoso demands made on the players. The Prelude begins with a duet for the two horns, answered by baritone and tuba, the material being rather rhetorical in style and although the Postlude begins in a similar fashion it also develops material from the Scherzo (slowed down of course) in the manner of a fugal exposition. VIEW SCORE PDF Capriccio for Brass Band (Robbert Vos) was the winner of both the overall prize decided by the judges and Public Commendation prize for the 2020 International Brass Band Composer Competition, a contest that included some 92 entries from around the world. The composer writes: 'My Capriccio for Brass Band is a lively, intense and virtuosic piece based on several thematic, rhythmical and harmonic ideas which are developed during the piece. It is non-programmatic and not based on a storyline. The middle section, in contrary, is in more of a minimalistic style, where there is room to create a mysterious and open atmosphere. Rhythmical elements are quoted from the opening movement, whilst clashing chords are used to build up tension. The last movement builds to a big climax, where several of the compositorial ideas used before come together for the finale.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back! The composer, who lives and works at the edge of the Forth estuary in Edinburgh has been inspired here by the intriguing "tap" dance that the gulls perform on the grass at certain times to encourage worms to break the surface. The middle movements describe the birds' "dancing" in flight, with a waltz and a slow soaring melody. The piece was written for the COOP Glasgow Brass Band on the occasion of their winning the Scottish brass band championship in 2009 and was broadcast on BBC Scotland's "Classics Unwrapped" in November of that year. For this brooding piece the composer has used the following storyline. "A sad elderly man sits alone in a bar whilst an accordionist plays a slow tango. A beautiful woman walks in wearing a single black pearl necklace and proceeds to dance with the old man. Gradually the music becomes more and more spirited and the dance faster as the old man becomes youthful again. With a passionate kiss he passes out in the girls arms and when he awakens he is back in the bar alone save for the accordionist. As he contemplates his dream he notices a single black pearl left behind on the bar. The sombre mood is lightened in the middle section by a deliberately trite and vibrato fuelled section, but we soon return to the opening material for a slow fade-out" Composer Colin Skinner wrote this piece especially for Superbrass' debut CD, Under the Spell of Spain. Duration: 6.30. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful, especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it's played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chamber combinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion.Duration: 11:45

The famous monolith Uluru (formally known as Ayers Rock) is the one of the attractions in the Northern Territory of Australia. This colossal red rock lies in the middle of a desert plain. At dusk, a beautiful spectacle develops as the setting sun envelops the rock in rose-red hues. There are tourists who used to climb the rock, while this is a taboo according to the indigenous religion of the Aboriginals. Besides, the climb is very strenuous. A walk around the rock is also an unforgettable experience. During a journey through Australia, Henk Hogestein was inspired by this rock; he composed this robust rock number to cherish the memory of it.Duration: 3:00
