Sweet echoes of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in the introduction bring a gentle slumber. Breathing is calm and sleep holds the promise of rest and relaxation. With the onset of the REM sleep phase, however, in which most dreams take place and where the day's events are worked through, we hear other sounds played. With distorted sounds, reminiscent of an old gramophone, the music pulls the listener inevitably ever deeper into the dreamscape, in a very realistic dangerous situation that comes to a dramatic head. It triggers a desperate struggle between the impulse to awaken and the exhausting urge to flee. For a short moment, it seems as if the wakeful urge has won out, before dream's powerful spell is again cast, and there's no escape...Duration: 17:00

Henry Wood's medley Fantasia on British Sea Songs was arranged in 1905 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. For many years it was as an indispensable item at the BBC's Last Night of the Proms concert.Wood's arrangement comprised nine parts, although this transcription has been somewhat truncated to make it more manageable for a brass band concert. One Fine Day is the most famous arias from the opera Madam Butterfly. It comes at the beginning of Act II, which is set three years after the action of Act I. Pinkerton, Butterfly's husband, is a US Naval Officer and he had to return to the sea shortly after their wedding. In the aria, she sings about the day he will return, seeing the ship appear on the horizon, then seeing it enter the harbour. 'Oh Sweet Dardanella, I love your harem eyes. I'm a lucky fellow, to capture such a prize'Dardanella was written in 1919 and became one of the most popular songs of the 1920's selling 13 million copies, going on to become a huge jazz standard covered by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby amongst others.This arrangement for Brass Band by Dario Salvi takes us back to the most famous version of 1920 sung by Vernon Dalhart and Gladys Rice, where the opening calls to mind the sounds of a fairground.Dario's arrangement moves between styles with an almost clockwork sound at one point changing to laid back swing beat at another, all supporting this cheerful melody.
