Commissioned by the Greater Manchester Hub Youth Brass Band for their 2014 season, Starburst is a high-octane work in a contemporary style with elements of rock and funk fusion. The piece features soloistic input from all sections, with vibrant percussion colours adding to the overall effectiveness. Although the piece sounds extremely virtuosic it is accessible for most bands, and is fun to rehearse as well as exciting to listen to. This is interpreted in a metaphorical sense as a statement of egalitarian sentiments equivalent to "we're all the same under the skin" or "we are all God's children". i.e. This is music for everyone!

Franz Strauss (1822 - 1905) was a famous horn player who held the post of Principal Horn in the Munich Court Orchestra. In that post, he played in the premieres of several Wagner operas. He wrote two horn concerti, as well as other works for horn of which this is the best known. This arrangement was made for Sheona White.

St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. Liberty Fanfare (Score & Parts) - John Williams
Liberty Fanfare is one of John Williams' lesser-known works, simply because it is not a film theme! In fact, the orchestral original was written for the re-opening of the Statue of Liberty following extensive repairs. This took place 4th July 1986, hence the music's sense of celebration and national pride. Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 5 minutes
