The Salvation Army song Keep in step (S.A.S.B. 986) is given a tongue-in-cheek treatment, with the irony of a song that speaks of keeping in step at all times being used in a time signature that would be impossible to march to! This does make the music technically challenging and therefore careful preparation is needed to ensure everything remains within the correct bear, and that the rhythms sound convincing to the listener. There is also a touch of Broadway thrown in, with a recurring motif reminiscent of Gershwin's appropriately named Fascinating Rhythm.

Keep it light throughout and make the most of every opportunity to play quietly. In sections D and E, The first Nowell is presented in 2/2 time. This beautiful music is from the end of Act 2 of the opera Hansel and Gretel by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921). The duet is a prayer by the brother and sister as they seek the protection of angels before falling asleep on the forest floor. The opera, Humperdinck's most famous composition, is based on the fairy tale by the Grimm brothers, and has libretto by the composer's sister. It was first performed in December, 1893.

A traditional gospel spiritual originally written in 1905 by Civilla D. Martin and Charles H. Gabriel, the song is most associated with actress-singer Ethel Waters. The song, now in the public domain, has been covered extensively in gospel music, with notable versions by Shirley Caesar, Marvin Gaye, Kirk Franklin and the Family, Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount (from Sister Act 2), Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dottie West, Barbara Mandrell and Jessica Simpson. This version is for tenor horn soloist with brass band accompaniment.

This march is based on the hymn tune 'Ascalon' named after the Palestinian city which was of strategic importance in the Crusader Wars. The tune is also called 'The Crusader's Hymn' and was used as such by Franz Liszt in his oratorio 'St. Elizabeth'. The melody is seldom absent and it can be heard in some form or other throughout the march.

The centrepiece of this decidedly patriotic and stately march is the Canadian anthem 'O Canada' although the original score (1932) refers to a different set of words ('O Canaan'). The anthem is presented in successively more ornate fashion in the trio section, the musical drama building like a Sousa march so that a da capo is not required. While now considered to be bit of a 'war horse', the march remains great fun to play.

Band director and radio presenter Yutaka Nishida hails from Tokyo and is the Frank Renton of the Japanese brass band world. He presents a weekly two-hour music programme on the Japanese national radio station, Digital Radio Musicbird. The programme is called The Bandwagon and the station commissioned Philip Sparke to compose a march, which could be used as the theme tune. The result is this bright and breezy march in simple ABA form. A great lively item for any concert.
