Citadel's Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l'Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, "The Queen of Citadels", with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire. Duration: 4.15

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.Duration: 11.00

Down by the Salley Gardens Brass Band (Score & Parts)
A thoroughly gripping melody of Irish descent constitutes the basis on which this exceedingly beautiful little piece of music rests. Down by the Salley Gardens is a guaranteed heartbreaker on your next concert. Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set, a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc., I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. I simply had to do something with it. Een meeslepende traditional van Ierse komaf staat aan de basis van dit wonderschone werkje. Down by the Salley Gardens belooft een hartenbreker te worden op uw eerstvolgende concert. De tekst van deze Ierse traditional wordt meegeleverd en daarmee is een combinatie met zang ook zeer goed mogelijk. De arrangeur: Bladerend door een liedboek met traditionals, enz., was ik meteen getroffen door dit nummer en zijn uitzonderlijk mooie en sfeervolle melodie. Ik moest gewoon iets mee doen. 03:30

Holst's suite The Planets was written between 1914 and 1916 and with the exception of Mercury, which was written last, Holst wrote the music in the sequence we hear them. So, in 1914, came the insistent rhythmic tread of Mars, The Bringer of War. It is widely known that the sketches were completed prior to the outbreak of the First World War, so the music is less a reaction to the declaration of war itself, but more an impending sense of inevitability of a war to unfold. John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin' Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment.
