MARCH OF THE HOURS (Brass Band Set) - Emil Soderstrom
March of the Hours was first performed at Star Lake Music Camp in 1962 with the composer supplying an informative listening guide which was printed in the published score; "The phrases are of 12 crotchets each (three bars) signifying the 12 hours. Up to the trio, the music describes the headlong search for pleasure by the thoughtless. Abruptly, the trio brings 'I need thee every hour', but an episode employing the original theme pushes it aside until it reappears, this time against a background of chimes of the full hour (Westminster chimes). While the hour strikes 12, a paraphrase of the opening strains of 'When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more' is heard. Here the music stops, to be followed by the trumpet sounding (cornets and trombones) and the rest of the band responds with 'When the roll is called up yonder' with a final 'I'll be there'."

DAVID OF THE WHITE ROCK (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Ray Bowes
This melody is reputed to have originated in Caernarvonshire, North Wales. Tradition holds that a bard called David, lying on his deathbed, called for his harp and performed this plaintive tune, expressing a desire that it should be played at his funeral. Ever since the tune has been called by his name and that of his house 'Garagwen' ('Druid Stone' or 'White Rock'). The solo is not just a slow melody with brass band accompaniment but is a composite whole, the band needing as much sensitivity as the soloist in the presentation.

£59.99Bofors To The Fore Joseph Knight
This piece was a commission to commemorate the memory of Gunner A. E. Collins who during the second world war was engaged in an action where during an advance through Belgium heavy resistance was met and he and an officer had to cover a retreat using Bofors guns. In the final report the title of this piece was actually used by the commanding officer.The piece its self is in three movements and follows the flow of the battle. The first movement called "Advance" is cautious and has the hint of battle. It starts quietly and then builds up slowly and finishes unresolved. Movement two "Engagement" starts suddenly in 7/8 and uses cyclical rhythms and clustered chords to show the horror and chaos of battle and also the firing the Bofors guns. The third movement "Safe Return" brings all of the themes from the first two movements and finishes with "The End Of The Day". The commission stated that bugle calls and "The End Of The Day" should be included.The piece is suitable for a concert work or indeed the contest stage.J Knight 2022.

This piece for solo baritone and brass band and lasts for just over six minutes. It is in four different sections with themes returning throughout. The four sections represent the four seasons of the marsh. The inspiration came from frequent walks over these now world famous marshes (recently the quickest ever traverse of a coocoo from Africa to Europe was recorded by a bird from Carlton). It starts with spring and then moves to, an at first, angry summer, then we have the gentleness of autumn which moves into the crispness of winter. The soloist would need to be of at least grade 7 standard and it requires, however briefly, for the soloist to attain a top D.

This Tenor Horn Solo was composed a number of years ago and was inspired by the phrase "Thou Comfortedst Me" from Isaiah 12. The piece is written in concert Bb with a slow introduction. The standard is high for the soloist, who needs to be able to achieve a comfortable written top D to effectively perform it. It lasts for approximately three and a half minutes and would make a superb solo for any standard concert.

Johann Baptist Georg Neruda was an 18th century Czech violinist and composer. Classical trumpet players include his Concerto in Eb for Trumpet & Strings as one of their favourite solos, which is often performed on an Eb Soprano Trumpet. My son Jon, a fine trumpet and cornet player, has played it often. Soprano Cornet player Simon Morgan asked me if it could be done with a brass band. I have taken the lively 1st movement, and adapted it as a soprano cornet solo. Cesar Franck was appointed as organist at the newly built Paris church of Saint Clotilde in 1858, though he wrote remarkably little music for the instrument. Piece Heroique was one of the Trois Pieces pour Grand Orgue written in 1878 for the inauguration of the new Cavaille-Coll organ at the Trocadero in Paris. It's stately grandeur and stirring finale make an ideal concert item, and this skillful arrangement (which includes an optional organ part for added colour) retains the character of the original, while transferring it to the sonority of the brass band. The maestoso opening of the first movement introduces the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material from which the entire work is structured. The first movement, allegro vivace, is a brilliant capriccio built upon two contrasting melodic lines that are developed throughout the movement. The form is sonata-allegro and it creates an atmosphere of energy and drive. The percussion section opens the second movement and presents the underlying rhythmic ostinato on which this brief but expressive siciliano (pastorale) is developed. Movement three is a rollicking rondo that challenges the technical and rhythmic control of the whol;e ensemble. The brilliant closing fanfare is based on material which has been developed in all three movements.
