This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour. EXULTATE DEO (Brass Band Set) - Paul Sharman
Translated as 'Praise the Lord', 'Exultate Deo' was conceived as an overture of praise to God. It brings together three contrasting songs of praise; 'Praise Him!', 'We are here to praise you' and 'Then will the very rocks cry out'. The bold opening uses the tune 'Gerontius' to which the words, 'Praise to the holiest in the height' are associated while the music concludes with the phrase 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven'.

PAEAN (Brass Band Set) - Dudley Bright
Commissioned by the Swiss Christian Brass Band Association in celebration of their 150th anniversary, the title 'Paean' means a shout of thanksgiving and praise. It is also the composer's personal expression of gratitude to God following major surgery. Although 'Paean' includes three fairly contemporary Christian songs, it is not intended to be played in any kind of rock or jazz style. The idiom is quite firmly rooted in brass band tradition. The opening fanfare-like section begins in celebratory mood before becoming more contemplative through the song 'Father God, I wonder'. A change of tempo heralds the statement of the thematically significant song 'Hosanna' before immediately moving to 'Faithful God'. Following a fugato the music retraces its steps to a triumphant restatement of the opening music.

KERYGMA (Brass Band Set) - Steven Ponsford
The Greek word 'kerygma' was adopted by the early Christian church as a way of expressing 'the word of God proclaimed'. The composer has taken this concept and used three contemporary worship songs, 'He is Lord', 'Jesus Christ' and 'He has risen', along with fragments of the more traditional 'Easter Hymn', to proclaim in music the Lordship of the risen Christ.

Deus Solus (meaning God Alone) was composed for the Melbourne Staff Band's 130th anniversary at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth. It is based on three Christian tunes - the 18th century hymn O God, our help in ages past, and the more contemporary songs God and God alone (Phill McHugh) and Chris Bowater's Faithful God. The work begins quietly and with a sense of the unknown, with references to O God, our help in ages past, alluding to the formation and early days of the band.
