£89.95TUBA CONCERTO (Gregson) (Tuba Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward
This work was commissioned by the Besses o' th' Barn Band with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It was written for, and is dedicated to, John Fletcher, who gave the first performance in Middleton Civic Hall, near Manchester, on 24 April, 1976, with Besses o' th' Barn Band conducted by the composer. Another interesting feature about the premire was that it was recorded by BBC Television for an Omnibus programme with Andr Previn as presenter. The concerto exists in four versions: with brass band (1976), orchestra (1978), wind band (1984) and piano reduction.The concerto is in three movements, following the usual, quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso,Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first movement has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first one being rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in passing to the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section.The second movement begins with a chorale, but after the entry of the tuba it leads to a cantabile theme, softly unfolded by the soloist. The opening chorale passage returns, this time briefly on muted brass, and leads to a middle section which is more chromatic in style and soon builds to a powerful climax, where the opening cantabile theme triumphantly returns. The music subsides, returning to the opening chorale and ending peacefully.The finale is light and breezy in style, and is cast in rondo form. After a brief introduction the tuba announces the main rondo theme, which is dance-like and a little jaunty. There are two episodes: the first a broad sweeping tune, the second a slowish waltz and a little jazz-like. After a virtuoso cadenza reference is made to the very opening of the concerto before the work ends with a triumphal flourish.The Tuba Concerto has established itself as one of the main works in the solo tuba repertoire. It has been performed and broadcast in over 40 countries all over the world. There are currently six commercial recordings of the concerto in its various versions.resolution in C major, pointed by a simple but expansive melody towards which the piece has been heading, and ending in a blaze of joyful colour.Duration: 18 mins

ABOUT THIS PIECE: 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' was written by all members of the band Coldplay for their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin said: "The song came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce". The chart was originally released in 2003 to critical acclaim. In 2007 Mark Ronson covered the song on his album 'Version' - it is this version this arrangement is based upon. The following arrangement was devised as a concert opener - written as such to allow different sections of the band to make their way to the stage one at a time. The suggested stage entry directions for this arrangement are: Percussion > Basses > Trombones > Horns & Baritones > Cornets & Euphonium. Dragons' Rise was commissioned by the Tredegar Town Band in July 2008 for their CD recording Spirit of the Valleys, to represent the band beginning their resurrection from a difficult time in the bands history back through to becoming on of the best bands in the world. It was premiered by the Tredegar Town Band at the National Eisteddfod contest in Cardiff in August 2008, performed live on national television, where the band were victorious.Dragons' Rise was the first piece composed by Matthew as the bands new composer-in-residence. Subsequent pieces have included Legends of Cyfarthfa and Nightingale Dances, both winners of the Cyril Beere award for Best New Composition at Brass in Concert, The Smile and Activate.

Paint It Black - Mick Jagger & Keith Richards - Len Jenkins
"Paint It Black" (originally released as "Paint It, Black") was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and first released as a single on 6 May 1966. It became the Rolling Stones' sixth number one in the UK and has remained influential as the first number one hit featuring a sitar. The song came at a pivotal period in The Rolling Stones' recording history, a time that saw the song-writing collaboration of Jagger and Richards assert itself as the principal composers of the band's original material. Its lyrics are for the most part meant to describe bleakness and depression and describe the extreme grief suffered by one stunned by the sudden and unexpected loss of wife, lover or partner. It famously plays during the end credits of the film Full Metal Jacket. Beginning in the style of an ironic minuet, which can be by-passed by starting at bar 54 where the heavy rock beat takes over, the piece is interesting and within the capabilities of 3rd or 4th section bands. For those bands with a drummer and one percussionist, an alternative percussion part is provided.

£44.95Glorified (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Glorified was composed for the Canadian Staff Band's 50th Anniversary celebrations. This work is based on two tunes, Lord, be glorified (T.B. 738), a significant song at Canada's Territorial Music School over the years, and Great is thy faithfulness (T.B. 641). This song celebrates and signifies God's faithfulness to all associated with the Canadian Staff Band, and the commitment shown by its members through the years.The first half of the work harkens back to those members of the band who tragically perished in the early days on RMS Empress of Ireland, which was en route to England for the 1914 International Congress when it was struck by another vessel and sank. The rhythmic ostinatos heard represent the passing of time over the years. After the somewhat dark introduction, the music settles into a reflective rendition of In my life, Lord, be glorified (S.A.S.B. 593), before bursting into a rhythmic and jagged mixed-metre section. A yearning elegy pays tribute to those who lost their lives.The second half of the piece is celebratory in nature and commemorates the reformation of the band and the rich history which has ensued in the subsequent years. The rhythmic energy found in this section builds to a majestic presentation of the tune Lord, be glorified, which leads into the return of Great is thy faithfulness but in an optimistic fashion.

This is a big band style number which is modelled on Barrie Gott's brilliant Lightwalk. It begins with a walking bass before horns state the highly whistleable tune for the first time. The full band quickly joins and there is an extended solo break for cornet. A tiptoeing tuba solo precedes the final key change which propels the piece to its infectiously foot-tapping conclusion.
