Sing Praise - Geert Jan Kroon
Sing praise is an upbeat opener or concert piece that is based on the Old Hundredth. It was a commission by Flevo Brass Emmeloord to praise the conductor/teacher Klaas de Jong. I know Klaas as a high-spirited teacher who always devotes his time to guiding young players and developing music ensembles by investing in youth bands and music education. The title is a reference to the hymn tune Old Hundredth and a message to ensembles to sing praise to teachers and youth.

This piece is intended to be a bright, sparkling concert march and features the spiritual 'I got a robe'. The quick tempo is to encourage a performance of sparkle and wit and, at the same time, to reflect the mood of celebration in the spiritual. The song was sung by slaves to encourage them to remember that, although they might be deprived of even basic items like robes in their present plight, one day, when they get to heaven, 'all God's children got a robe'.

DescriptionThis short work for brass band was written in 1982 for a concert to celebrate the 80th birthday of Harry Mortimer, one of the great figures in the world of brass bands. Not surprisingly, it references the well-known song Happy Birthday, in a breezy, up-tempo, short concert prelude.The premiere was given at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester by the Fodens Band, conducted by Howard Snell.In 2014 the composer revised it for a trip to the North American Brass Band Championships, where it was performed, also as an 80th birthday tribute, this time to the composer's brother Bram; it was subsequently dedicated to both Harry Mortimer and Bram Gregson.For more information on Edward Gregson's music please visit the composer's website: www.edwardgregson.com

This work has been dedicated to the Accademia Musicale Francigena in Monterosi, to celebrate the occasion of the third "Tommaso Albani", a national competition for wind orchestras. The first performance of Monterosi was conducted by the composer, who had been invited for the third time to be a jury member and guest conductor. This is the music of Leos Janacek (1854-1928) - exciting, powerful, emotive, impassioned, unpredictable, and many other definitions all rolled into one! Janacek was little known in Britain until the 1960's, when the conductor Charles Macherras introduced his unique music and opera to the western audience. His orchestral Sinfonietta was an instant hit. Janacek has since been one of the featured composers in the 'Proms'.The three pieces which I have arranged for brass band are INTRODUCTION, ORGAN SOLO and INTRADA from Janacek's Glagolitic Mass. They work equally well together or on their own, as they each have their own identity. They can be purchased together or separately.1. Wild Flower Variations - Traditional - Len Jenkins
The theme for this delightful piece is believed to be Spanish and was originally heard in a Mediterranean church over 30 years ago, sung by the local choir accompanied by local musicians. The theme is not stated separately, and the piece begins directly with the First Variation. The following Variations are subtly different from the First, yet both retain the essential warmth of the Mediterranean sun in their harmonic progression. A short Coda rounds off this relaxing and escapist siesta. Time to wake up...The piece is scored to be playable by most Third or Fourth Section bands.
