This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was done for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell. This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. Skidaddle will be the perfect item to provide a lighter moment in your band's programme. The composer Barrie Gott writes: ''Skidaddle' literally means to move in a hurry. This piece means exactly that - to get moving. I was experimenting at the piano at school one morning waiting for my first students and this little ditty came to mind. Four hours later I had the first draft done! It is supposed to be a bit of fun with a few technical demands for cornet and euphonium in particular. The semi-quaver (sixteenth) work needs to be precise. Try and get the audience involved and they'll be yours for the larger works on the programme.' This is another work in a series of swing pieces which began in 1986 with Light-walk (F.S. 462). Shine was written to commemorate 30 years since Light-walk's conception at Star Lake Music Camp. As such, there are brief references to it within the piece. A good understanding of swing style is essential and the articulations should be observed as much as possible. The martellatos should be short and accented. This music should be played with a sense of fun and audience participation is encouraged.

Wer nur den lieben Gott lasst walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled 'Trostlied' literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach's use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan's arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer's original intention - a song of consolation.
