This work was composed by Cesar Franck in 1881, and was inspired by Burger's Ballade. The dramatic and religious character of the Poem is set from the beginning by the horns and later, by the bells.The approaching Ride is preceded by a broader passage and then, in a quick 9/8 rhythm the horns are heard again, answered by the cornets and the trombones.After some agitated passages there is a brilliant Andante movement after which the rhythm becomes more and more animated.At last the Ride appears, the gallop becoming wilder and wilder until it finally dies away in a chilling roll on the cymbal.

A condensed score is included with this workGregson wrote his Prelude and Capriccio in 1972. It exists in two versions: one for cornet and band and the other for cornet or trumpet and piano.The work began life in the early sixties, the Capriccio being composed when the composer was 17. A Prelude was added to complete the work, which lasts for approximately 8 minutes. The Prelude is reflective in character and uses long melodic lines over undulating chromatic harmony. The music reaches a climax before a brief reprise of the opening. The Capriccio is somewhat jazzy in its opening syncopated rhythms, but has a more lyrical middle section before a finale exploiting the virtuoso character of the instrument.

Saint-Saens' magnificent Finale from Symphony No.3 (widely known as the 'Organ Symphony') has here been arranged for brass band with optional organ by Kevin Norbury. It was recorded by The International Staff Band on its CD Manuscripts, although this version has been revised in places. Saint-Saens decided to add the organ and piano to his 3rd symphony as a pragmatic orchestration innovation. The composition of this symphony was probably started in 1885 and a first draft was completed in Prague in 1886. Saint-Saens later recalled its eventful genesis: 'The Symphony in C was three-quarters sketched out when I found it impossible to write the finale. I did not know how to resolve this situation, until one night I suddenly woke up and, in a sort of hallucination, I heard the whole finale, which I hastily wrote down in outline, knowing that if I went back to sleep without having put anything on paper, I would have forgotten it all the next day.' The symphony was first performed under the composer's direction at Saint James's Hall in London on May 19, 1886. This arrangement by Kevin Norbury can both function as a stand-alone brass band piece, and be performed with an organ by omitting the notes found in square brackets in the parts and score. The premiere of Prokofiev's 5th Symphony took place on January 13, 1945, with Prokofiev himself conducting the USSR State Symphony Orchestra. During the performance, artillery fire could be heard in the distance, celebrating the Red Army's victory over German forces and providing a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 emerged as a symbol of hope and human resilience. The 2nd movement is the Allegro marcato, a lively scherzo. The piece is energetic, full of contrasts and dynamic melodies, and embodies a spirit of defiance. It is one of the arranger's favourite pieces, and translates brilliantly to brass band for an orchestral transcription. Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' The 30 Day Technical Challenge This 30 day program is a step by step guide to improve your technique. Each practice session is laid out day by day, exercise by exercise for maximum technical improvement. During the next 30 days you will improve: Breathing Lip Flexibility Single Tonguing Finger Dexterity The Bootcamp will only require a small amount of extra time on top of your normal practice regiment. All you will need is a metronome and your instrument. It does not matter if you are grade 1 or grade 8+ this program will improve your technique. Practice Until Failure If you do not practice until you fail, you are not pushing your technique to its limit. Whether it be squeezing the last drop of air out of your lungs in a breathing exercise, or completing a tonguing exercise until your tongue is completely exhausted, the harder you push yourself the more progress you will see during the 30 days. Taking The Tests Take all 4 tests on day 1. Try to push yourself and reach the highest level possible. There over 20 levels that you can achieve on each test. Start each test from the beginning, playing each exercise at the stated tempo markings before moving on. Exercise 1 corresponds to levels 1 - 5, one level for each tempo written. Levels 6 - 10 are from Exercise 2, 11 - 15 Exercise 3 and 16 - 20 Exercise 4. If you reach level 20, continue changing the tempo on Exercise 4 until you reach failure. Add 1 level for every extra tempo marking completed. Make note of the level you achieve for each test, this will be needed for your comparison at the end of the 30 days. Once you have taken the tests simply follow the calendar and complete the set exercises each day. The weekend practice sessions ask you to repeat the exercises from earlier in the week. This gives you a second chance to push your technique further on each exercise. The Final Test Complete the 4 tests again on day 30 and compare your results. Good luck and enjoy the next 30 days!
