Deus Invictus draws its inspiration from well-known words from Romans 8: 38-39; 'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any owers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God'. The music reflects the confidence and certainty of the scripture text while, as in everyday life, trials and tests come along which are reflected in a sequence of musical skirmishes. The work introduces the 19th century hymn 'St Albinus' to a wider audience and also includes references to the tunes 'St Margaret' and 'Rachie'. A setting of the Easter Hymn, 'Christ the Lord is risen today!', is heard followed by a final reprise of 'St Albinus'.

Deus Solus (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Wainwright, Andrew

Deus Solus (meaning God Alone) was composed for the Melbourne Staff Band's 130th anniversary at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth. It is based on three Christian tunes - the 18th century hymn O God, our help in ages past, and the more contemporary songs God and God alone (Phill McHugh) and Chris Bowater's Faithful God. The work begins quietly and with a sense of the unknown, with references to O God, our help in ages past, alluding to the formation and early days of the band.

Score only. 2013 National Champsionship Area Qualifying Contest - 4th Section. About the lovely county of Devon are songs and stories galore, for it has 'the best of both worlds' in its seascapes and inland scenery. This suite will perhaps bring to remembrance a few aspects of its beauty. The fantasy is in four easily distinguished parts; I. Moorland Songs; here is loneliness as well as beauty. II. The Fair; containing a reference to the song, Widdicombe Fair. III. Quiet Village; little disturbs the even tenor of life, and the 'echo' of music from the church serves to deepen the peace all around. IV. Seafarers; swashbuckling music with reminiscences of half-forgotten shanties.
