Judd: The Maple Leaf

This march is characteristic in style of many written by Bramwell Coles. It derives its title from the song, 'The Maple Leaf Forever' while there are also strong references to 'O Canada' and 'Rule Britannia'.

Judd: The New-Born Babe

The chorale which forms the basis of this prelude dates from the sixteenth century and was used by J.S.Bach in his Cantata No.122, 'Das neugeborne Kinderlein'. On his score Bruce Broughton includes a translation by R. Rutledge of the words; 'There comes the true jubilee, what are we eternally lamenting? Look alive! It is a time for singing, for the Christ-child exorcises all sorrow'.

Judd: The Pilgrim Way

Attempting to recreate the atmosphere of mediaeval pilgrims, this suite comprises three separate, yet linked movements. I. Based on John Bunyan's poem 'He Who Would Valiant Be', the music reminds us of the words 'No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight, he will make good his right to be a pilgrim'. II. A transcription of the composer's own setting of 'God be in my head'. III. The original themes in this movement express feelings of joy and excitement of present day pilgrims journeying on the Christian path.

Judd: The Present Age

It is the present age of the late 1960's and 70's which claims the composer's attention in this attempt to express in music the background against which the modern young Christian has to work.

Judd: The Proclamation of Christmas

A clever and lively medley of Christmas carols by Stephen Bulla, Chief Music Arranger for the Band of the US Marines. Featuring the well known carols 'Hark the herald angels sing', 'Ding dong merrily on high', 'The first Nowell', 'While shepherds watched' and 'Angels from the realms of glory'.

Judd: The Promised Land

The Promised Land was commissioned by the Buy As You View Band and first performed by them as their own choice test piece at the European Brass Band Contest 2006 in Belfast. The story of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt to find the Promised Land is one of the most dramatic to be found in the Bible. This music, although continuous, seeks in its seven main sections, to portray something of the drama found in the story.

Judd: The Red Shield

Written in 1928, this march has become a Salvation Army classic. The title refers to The Salvation Army red shield logo known the world over.

Judd: The Redcliff March

First published in 1929, this march was written when the composer was living in Redcliffe, Australia.

Judd: The Roll Call

This march derives its title from the American hymn When the roll is called up yonder which is used as a bass solo. British expatriate William Broughton became a master of the American street march, the trio and break-up strain of this march being unmistakeably American and reminiscent of the golden age of American band music under Sousa, King and Fillmore.
