Judd: Song of the Eternal

A Leslie Condon masterpiece, acknowledged as such by its featuring on YBS's Essays for Brass Vol 3. Condon describes it as an attempt to comment in sound on the first chapter of St. John's Gospel incorporating the creation, the coming of Christ, and the Atonement.

Judd: Songs of The Morning

The first two movements of this suite are based on the composer's own songs, a carol 'Welcome, Happy Morning' and 'Begin the Day with God'. The third introduces the tune 'Hark, Hark my Soul' with the line 'Bright day shall dawn and sin's dark night be past' forming the link to the title.

Judd: Spirit of Joy

This march was awarded first prize in the 1930 American Golden Jubilee National Music Competition and was published the same year in the first edition of the American Festival Series. It was subsequently re-printed in the General Series of 1984. Soderstroms imaginative use of syncopation and chromatic harmony brought a new, American sound to the Salvation Army march. For example, he took the old Salvation Army fight song Hark, hark my soul written and changes its metre from 6/8 to 4/4 while also syncopating it!

Judd: Spirit of Life

The song 'Spirit of life' was written in the 1980s for the Ireland Divisional summer music school at which Derick Kane was the Musical Director. The song was later arranged as this sensitive euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment.

Judd: Spirit of Praise

The trio section of this march closely follows the vocal score of a setting of the hymn Praise my soul, the king of heaven by A. P. Berggren of Denmark. This hymn-like style, especially in the trio section, was not uncommon in Salvation Army marches of the period, intentionally devotional and a contrast to the lively nature which surrounded it.

Judd: Spirit of the Pioneers

This work was composed for the Canadian Staff Band for their 25th Anniversary celebrations in 1994, and was premiered at the Spring Festival in the Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto.

Judd: Stand Strong

This march was written for the North York Temple Band, Toronto, for their tour of the UK in 2012. Inspired by St Paul's words to the Ephesians to 'put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground' (Ephesians 6:13 NIV), the music features three songs of warfare. The first song (S.A.S.B. 989) forms the introduction to the piece and is presented by Percussion and two muted Cornets. The image here is of a distant army approaching with banners aloft. The volume of the music increases as the army approaches:We'll shout aloud throughout the landThe praises of our God,We'll fight beneath our flag unfurled,Kept by his precious blood.

Judd: Star Lake

Unbelievable to think that this march is 70 years old written when Eric Ball was a guest at the famous Star Lake music camp in the USA. Entertaining and easily within the grasp of all bands.

Judd: Star of Wonder

This up-tempo arrangement features the carols 'The first Nowell' and 'We three kings of Orient are'.
