Newly edited contest version.This piece pays tribute to the vast heritage of Salvation Army brass band music. Written in one movement, it is rhapsodic in nature and quotes references from just a few of the many iconic pieces from the past, progressing naturally through the different styles of music; firstly marches, followed by meditations, major works and then solos. The underpinning theme that binds the work together is the much-loved hymn, by Timothy Dudley-Smith, drawing particular attention to the last line of the first verse; Lord for the years, we bring our thanks today. This is music of thanksgiving to the rich inheritance that inspires writers today to continue the mission of the gospel through this very special and unique genre.

This delightful German lullaby-carol first appeared in print in Samuel Scheidt's Tablaturbuch of 1650, though it may have been written before then, either by Scheidt himself or by an unknown author. J. S. Bach's version (in the form of a melody and figured bass) was included in Schemelli's Gesangbuch of 1736, and it is that which this arrangement for brass band by Andrew Wainwright is based on. Written for Birmingham Citadel Band to play at their annual carol concert at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, this piece tells the story of the Nativity using the carols Who is He? and Calypso Carol. Brief appearances are made by the shepherds (While Shepherds Watched), the angels (Ding Dong! Merrily on High) and the wise men (The Kings' March and We Three Kings of Orient are). The music finishes with a majestic setting of the chorus of Who is He?, reminding us of baby Jesus.

Tchaikovsky's extremely popular ballet, The Nutcracker, was first performed in December 1892. Earlier in the same year the composer extracted several movements from the ballet to form a concert suite. The first performance of the suite was conducted by the composer and the suite was immediately received with huge enthusiasm.This arrangement was originally made for the GUS Band while the arranger was its Music Director.
