£34.09March - Helping Hands (Rob Bushnell) Brass Band
Helping Hands was written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). The piece is loosely programmatic in nature: The introductio is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands' anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. The second section (bars 35 to 52) sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section (bars 53 to 69) represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day. The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. The piece is influenced by marches that are commonly heard during the Whit Friday March Contests, using motifs, rhythms and harmonic progressions (sparingly) throughout the piece. Fanfare for the Future is a stirring and optimistic piece of music that celebrates the possibilities of the future. The piece is scored for brass band and percussion, and it features two contrasting themes: an exciting fanfare and a hymn-like melody. Written during Covid, the fanfare represents the challenges and obstacles that we face in the world, while the hymn represents our hopes and dreams for the future. The two themes come together in a grand finale, which represents our determination to overcome the challenges of the present and build a better future for ourselves and for generations to come. I was glad was originally a choral introit which is a popular piece in the musical repertoire of the Anglican church. It is traditionally sung in the Church of England as an anthem at the coronation of the British monarch, most recently that of King Charles III in May 2023. This transcription for brass band combines the choral and accompaniment parts meaning it is playable as a standalone arrangement. An optional organ part is included to augment the brass. The cornet section is divided into two choirs to create an antiphonal effect. The 'Vivats' are included in this transcription but an optional cut is provided for that section. Franz Joseph Haydn's Horn Concerto No.1 in D major was composed in 1762, when he was new to the Esterhazy court. It is a virtuosic concerto that showcases the beauty and range of the horn. The concerto was originally scored for solo horn and orchestra, and is one of Haydn's most popular works. Here it has been arranged by Duncan Wilson for tenor horn with brass band. His arrangement of the concerto is a faithful and effective adaptation of the original work. The movement opens with a lively tutti introduction, followed by the entrance of the solo horn. The horn plays a series of melodies and passages that are both lyrical and virtuosic. The band provides accompaniment and contrast, and the two interact in a lively dialogue. The movement builds to a climax and then concludes with a triumphant coda. Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' The Nutcracker, for many, has become a must-see event every Christmas, often the principle of Christmas traditions that has been passed down for generations. The original ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), which premiered in 1892 was not received with the critical acclaim that befitted such as masterpiece, so he wrote two suites based on the music, and the popularity of the ballet soared, although Tchaikovsky would regrettably not live to witness the success. This arrangement loosely interprets five of the most well-known themes from the ballet in a quasi-jazz setting: March, Waltz of the flowers, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Dance of the Mirlitons and Trepak. £60.61Avifauna (Brass Band) Joshua Tyler Jameson
This highly descriptive work was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America and will be a terrific concert or entertainment contest item. The music paints the picture of the lives of a variety of different birds. The composer writes: 'When I began thinking about this project I was sitting in my office in the early morning, the sun having just risen. There was a gentle breeze and the only thing that I could hear (aside from my hungry whining cats) was the gentle song of the birds outside my open window. As much of my work is programmatic, almost like symphonic poems, this immediately gave me the image of a majestic sunrise with all types of birds fluttering about, almost as if out of an episode of Planet Earth. When I was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America, I knew the project had to be something the ensemble could grab onto. Something they could see. Something they could relate to. There being so many types of birds in North America, I selected a handful to help tell my story... The scene where I came up with this idea seemed to be the perfect starting point. Sunrise, tiny chirps of Morning Birds floating around the twilight of dawn, swiftly moving towards the majesty of the sun cresting the horizon. A new day, the beginning of a story. As the sun rises higher in the sky, animal activity stirs, becoming lively and wild. The flowers have opened up to drink in the sun's rays, leaving them open to nectar-seeking Hummingbirds. Whizzing by at lightning speed, the hummingbirds journey from flower to flower, drinking their fill until the sun begins to set back over the horizon. When daylight fades, the enigmatic Owl floats silently through the sky. The wonder of these creatures comes not just from their beauty, but also from their mystery and their ferocity. We see images in pop culture of majestic white owls and marvel in their beauty... but to a mouse roaming the forest floor in the dark of the night, the terror of suddenly being dropped upon by a silent predator is anything but peaceful. In the dead of night, soft rolling clouds thicken as a storm begins to brew. With the ensuing rain also emerges the grotesque scavenging Vulture; marching along from carcass to carcass, tearing into the rotting leftovers of another predator's kill, gorging themselves until over-full. However, from this nightmare fuel of a bird, a new day awaits... As the dawn of another day approaches, you begin to hear the same morning birds you heard the previous day. When the light finally breaks the horizon, the soaring majesty of the Eagle drives us to the end of our story; an exciting journey told through the eyes of the winged creatures that paint the skies of North America. £60.61We Seven (Brass Band) Derek Jenkins
We Seven, the title of this work, comes from a book by the same name written by the United States's first astronauts. The composer writes: 'In 1959, the United States entered the space race by starting a programme whose main aims included sending a solo astronaut into space and recovering him safely. Project Mercury, as this programme was so called, recruited the first seven American astronauts and successfully sent six of them into space. These men were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton, and collectively they became known as the 'Mercury Seven.' Through their efforts and those of countless others, the United States Space Program accomplished much with these six flights, including successfully sending an astronaut into space, putting a man in orbit, and keeping him up there for more than 24 hours. In 1962, shortly after Glenn and Carpenter's orbital flights, the 'Mercury Seven' co-wrote the book We Seven and throughout it, the astronauts discuss the events leading from their selection into the programme up through Carpenter's flight in May of 1962. The primary material for the work comes from two sources: the use of musical cryptograms to encode the astronauts names and initials into pitches and the aria 'Un bel di vedremo' from Giacomo Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly. The inclusion of the latter comes directly from one of Glenn's chapters in the book. Together with a couple of the other astronauts, he would often listen to the opera to unwind from a long day of training. I would like to think that as he was orbiting the Earth that this opera, particularly this aria, would be running through his mind.' This work commemorates the Project Mercury on the 50th anniversary of its conclusion and was written for Joseph Parisi and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Wind Ensemble. Dreams of America was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America. The concept of the 'American Dream' is an indelible part of the American psyche. Over time, notions of success, fame, and fortune have become synonymous with this idea. Some have achieved their personal 'American Dreams', and yet for others they often remain only a dream. Dreams of America takes a look at certain, generalised aspects of the 'American Dream' and pits them against the harsh realities faced by many, both in the past and present. To heighten these dichotomies, each movement is accompanied by a slideshow of historic and modern images related to the issues at hand. Movement 1: Yearning to Breathe Free explores the anger, fear, and subjugation that seems rampant in recent years, but has been present throughout the country's founding. Movement 2: Take my Stand looks at the role that change, protest, and equality has had and continues to have in our society. Movement 3: It Beckons and Beckons examines the beauty of nature and our role in preserving and protecting this country's natural wonders while illustrating the ease of which our environment can be ruined and destroyed. Movement 4: Sweet Land of Liberty reflects onthe composer's interpretation at what truly makes the United States of America a great country - the people who call this place home. The patriotic tune America the Beautiful has been woven throughout, in part for its poetic depiction of the American landscape and its call for "brotherhood from sea to shining sea!"
