£34.95AL SHARQ (An Arabic-Jazz Fusion) (Brass Band) - Hall, Daniel
Al Sharq (pronounced al-sha-rak) was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as part of their programme for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.The piece is an exciting and exotic concert work for brass band, which is heavily influenced by the genres 'Third Stream' and 'Arabic'. The composition is highly rhythmical and percussion heavy, which makes use of 'Tam-tam vibrato' - a technique which was invented by the composer especially for this composition.There are plenty of opportunities for the musicians to try something different, such as the aleatoric harmonic framework at the opening of the composition, shouting, 'hi-fiving', special choreography and even playing a didgeridoo!Al Sharq is a technically demanding piece which exploits the talents of all sections of the ensemble, especially the principal solo cornet, who starts the piece with an atmospheric cadenza. All of this makes Al Sharq a powerful and entertaining experience for both performer and listener.Grade: Advanced Duration:4:17

Legends of CyfarthfaCombining the music of Joseph Parry and the legendary Cyfarthfa Band, Legends of Cyfarthfa is a technically challenging but musically rewarding concert work. Robert Crawshay owned the Cyfarthfa Ironworks in South Wales creating a business empire second to none.Cyfarthfa Castle was built by Crawshay as the family home from the income made via the ironworks. He wanted his own private band to play under the name of the ironworks with the best players in the world, playing on the highest quality instruments at the time. Employing the band members under the guise of iron workers, the Cyfarthfa Band was made up of virtuoso players, performing for the pleasure of the Crawshay dynasty.This virtuosity can be heard in some of the more technically challenging sections of Legends of Cyfarthfa. Joseph Parry was born in Cyfarthfa.He composed the first piece of music specifically written for brass band called Tydfil Overture for the Cyfarthfa Band, alongside many other memorable works for other instrumentation.Legends of Cyfarthfa incorporates many of Parry's works including his opera Blodwen, hymn tune Aberystwyth, folk melody Myfanwy and the Tydfil Overture, alongside many other melodies from Wales. Written in 1987 as the accompaniment to New England Time Capsule, an Omnimax travelogue, and recently recorded by the Boston Pops, this three minute concert work adapts wonderfully for band. With true Williams craftmanship, it features brassy fanfares and a rich, sonorous hymn, all based on the same melodic intervals. John Williams' brilliant orchestration is successfully captured, making this a superb concert opener for brass bands.

Malcolm Arnold's ballet, Sweeney Todd, was first staged in 1959 by The Royal Ballet Company with choreography by John Cranko. The music was later adapted as a concert work and it is from this versionthat this brass band arrangement is made. The original concert suite lasts some 20 minutes, but this version has been shortened to a more manageable eight minutes. The first performance of this arrangement was given on the22nd October 2006 at the Malcolm Arnold Festival, Derngate, Northampton by the Rushden Windmill Band conducted by Richard Graves. Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section. Duration 8 minutes.

'Pandemic 1349' was written during September and October 2016 and received its premiere on Sunday 20 th November at the 40 th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead where it received the best new composition/arrangement award.'Pandemic 1349' is a concert work that aims to capture the atmosphere of fear and terror as the plague spreads throughout the city. The cries and screams get louder and reach a chaotic climax, before a calmer and reflective passage takes over - although the chaos and fear never totally leaves as the melodic material is played against the backdrop of what has gone before.London lost almost half of its population during the Black Death, making this one of the single most devastating events in the city's dark history. The outbreak not only shaped the number of inhabitants in London but also changed their mind-sets with many turning to religion - even the English language was to be forever altered.

This highly descriptive work from the pen of Joel Collier will be an excellent choice for bands looking for a test piece, but equally as effective as a concert work. The composer writes: 'Britain - from the Latin Britannia, which is itself derived from the Greek Prettanike, originally taken from the Celtic word Pretani, meaning 'the painted ones'. While Julius Caesar made two brief invasions of Britain in 54 and 55 B.C.E., the real Roman conquest of the Island began in 43 C.E. under emperor Claudius. The conquest spanned decades, and pitted the Roman forces against resistance leaders such as Caratacus and Boudicca - powerful leaders Rome did not fully anticipate. Rome was ultimately victorious, and Londinium became the capital of the new province of Britannia, but even the might of Rome could never subdue the entire island. The Land of the Painted People is written in six parts. The first three - The Mists of the Plains, Tribal Honor, and Hymn to the Earth - paint a picture of the native Britons prior to the Roman invasion. The latter three - Invasion, Rebellion, and Submission - depict the decades-long struggle against Roman conquest.' Torsion (Score & Parts) - Simon Dobson
Torsion was commissioned by the Leyland Band and first performed on 23 January 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Manchester, by Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris.This colourful and dynamic work is the most personal and ambitious that Simon Dobson composed during his residency with the Lancashire brass band. The dictionary defines torsion as the state of being twisted and the composer interprets this as the imagined dis-torsions and con-torsions of Time, Light and Sound in three contrasting movements. Simon Dobson fuses the traditional brass band sound with drive and energy of pop and funk jazz with optional digitally distorted 'echoes' providing added aural confusion at the points of climax.Although composed as a substantial concert work, Torsion would also make a challenging test-piece for contesting brass bands in the elite divisions.
