This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a special atmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. This highly descriptive work from the pen of Joel Collier will be an excellent choice for bands looking for a test piece, but equally as effective as a concert work. The composer writes: 'Britain - from the Latin Britannia, which is itself derived from the Greek Prettanike, originally taken from the Celtic word Pretani, meaning 'the painted ones'. While Julius Caesar made two brief invasions of Britain in 54 and 55 B.C.E., the real Roman conquest of the Island began in 43 C.E. under emperor Claudius. The conquest spanned decades, and pitted the Roman forces against resistance leaders such as Caratacus and Boudicca - powerful leaders Rome did not fully anticipate. Rome was ultimately victorious, and Londinium became the capital of the new province of Britannia, but even the might of Rome could never subdue the entire island. The Land of the Painted People is written in six parts. The first three - The Mists of the Plains, Tribal Honor, and Hymn to the Earth - paint a picture of the native Britons prior to the Roman invasion. The latter three - Invasion, Rebellion, and Submission - depict the decades-long struggle against Roman conquest.' Torsion (Score & Parts) - Simon Dobson
Torsion was commissioned by the Leyland Band and first performed on 23 January 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Manchester, by Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris.This colourful and dynamic work is the most personal and ambitious that Simon Dobson composed during his residency with the Lancashire brass band. The dictionary defines torsion as the state of being twisted and the composer interprets this as the imagined dis-torsions and con-torsions of Time, Light and Sound in three contrasting movements. Simon Dobson fuses the traditional brass band sound with drive and energy of pop and funk jazz with optional digitally distorted 'echoes' providing added aural confusion at the points of climax.Although composed as a substantial concert work, Torsion would also make a challenging test-piece for contesting brass bands in the elite divisions.

DURATION: 3'00". DIFFICULTY: 1st+. 'Ignition Sequence' was composed for Phoebe Mallinson and Tom Walgate with BD1 Brass for their appearance at the 2021 Wychavon Festival of Brass. The band's programme was inspired by the first British ESA Astronaut Time Peake and this work encapsulates the excitement and tension of a shuttle launch, accompanied by the sound of the countdown from the control centre. The solo parts are virtuosic in nature and show off the players' stylistic and technical abilities in this pseudo-jazz/funk-based short concert work.

The piece starts with a simple rhythmic pulse which is the basis of the entire work. This cell provides a platform for the piece to grow and develop starting with the first theme played by the euphoniums, all the way through to the conclusion performed in full gusto by the whole ensemble. The various motifs introduced throughout the opening of the piece are passed between the ensemble before the introduction of the three soloists.The central section of the piece features the Solo Trombone, Cornet and Euphonium as they take turns to play a jazz fusion solo whilst having some musical interplay with each other at the front of the stage. After this solo passage, the music then features the various sections within the ensemble, which pays homage to Weather Reports' famous "Birdland". In a jazz fused cannon, each new independent musical phrase is performed by the various sections standing. Starting with the Horns then Solo Cornets, Back Row and Flugal and finally the Baritones and Trombones.Once the different sections of the ensemble are featured, the piece then moves into the final stages. This section sees a reprieve of the opening material heard at the beginning, but further developed with the various melodic motifs passed around the ensemble. The ending builds on this material towards a rousing conclusion."Road to Run" is an up tempo, high energy concert work that has that 'feel-good factor' from start to finish. The idea behind the title is based on the feel and structure of the piece which takes the listener on a musical journey. And at 150 beats per minute - you could put it in your headphones and find your own 'Road to Run'.
