This lively new Concert March, "Friends of the Band", was written in recognition of those friends and supporters of all Brass Bands whose help financially and in all other ways, are invaluable in the successful running of the organisations. There is a slight hint of the song, "Dear Old Pals, Jolly Old Pals" in the first section which again embeds the feelings all players and conductors have towards our band's supporters. The work was originally composed for the Hook Norton Brass Band, when the composer's wife gave so much of her time encouraging supporters to become friends. This is a great addition to all bands' libraries and a way to pay tribute and thanks.

This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was done for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell. A slow lilting melody is presented in the cornet solo and passed between the band and the soloist to create images of the tranquil night before the piece reaches a climactic moment which is meant to represent the beams of light emerging as the sun rises. The theme is then presented in a tutti forte section before arriving at a tranquil finish. Still, still, still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. The melody is a folk tune from the Salzburg area and the tune appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folksong collection. The words describe the peace of the infant Jesus and his mother as the baby is sung to sleep. They have changed slightly over the years, but the modern standard German version was established in the mid-19th century. This arrangement by Stephen Tighe features the flugelhorn and horn section with brass band. PDF download includes score and parts. This lively and melodic piece was commissioned by Maltby Colliery Band in 2000. It was written as a feature for solo cornet and the cornet section. For its first broadcast performance on Radio Scotland, from Edinburgh in 2009 Mark O'Keefe played the solo part with the band of COOP Glasgow. This piece makes an impressive encore or opening to a band concert and is also available in a version for ten brass. Duration: 3.30

This timeless melody by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), is now chiefly remembered because of its inclusion in J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, (hence its title) where it is treated to a variety of rich harmonisations. It is mostly sung to Paulus Gerhardt's words, O Sacred head! sore wounded. This setting features the flugel and horns, who first play a lyrical descant to the famous hymn tune and then the melody itself, against a Bach-like obbligato in the accompaniment.Duration: 4:30
