Aspects of Adiemus is a collection from one of the world's most popular composers, Karl Jenkins. Adiemus, literally translated, means 'we will draw near' and represents a musical language which can be heard on five award winning albums from the composer.Since Adiemus has risen in popularity around the world, it has become a growing entity meaning many different things to many different people. Vocally, the spread of influence grows wider all the time, taking in Arabic and African sounds as well as Celtic and ecclesiastical ones. The percussion too has expanded using Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Chinese and even Australian instrumentation.The evolving nature of Adiemus has meant that it has been difficult to categorise. New age, classical crossover, world music, even pop. Karl sees this as a good sign: To me, Adiemus transcends labels. The fact that it reaches people of different backgrounds, faiths and cultures gives it a universal appeal which is special. The compositions can be spiritual, religious, meditative - it's open to move people in any away they choose to experience.Ironically, the Adiemus project got off the ground initially due to a television commercial for an airline. Karl Jenkins explains, I'd been toying with a new idea, completely separate to my work in advertising, but at this time, Jenkins Ratledge were commissioned to come up with the music for an airline commercial. We presented the client with a demonstration tape of one of my completed compositions and they loved it.That composition became known as Adiemus. The music for the airline commercial was aired and immediately drew interest from the public. Karl: It's ironic that a piece of music not originally intended for a TV commercial should end up on a TV commercial, and that this music became the springboard for the success of the Adiemus project.Expertly arranged by Peter Graham, Aspects of Adiemus features the eponymous Adiemus, an uplifting and instantly recognisable opener. Chorale - Za Ma Ba and Chorale - Vocalise are songs of sanctuary, the latter featuring a chamber group from within the band. The vibrant Song of the Spirit is a cornet feature, and the finale, Song of the Plains combines intense rhythmic energy with tribal harmonies. The successful songwriting team of Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane wrote Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas for the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis, where it was introduced by Judy Garland.The original lyrics were too melancholic and Garland asked for something a little bit more upbeat instead. Blane substituted them to the now-familiar lyrics of those Garland sang in the movie, although Frank Sinatra asked for one further change so that the song could be included on his album The Joy Of Christmas. It has been called 'The battle hymn of the Reformation' for the effect it had on increasing support for the Reformer's cause. The words and melody are so closely associated with its author, that the first lines are inscribed on Luther's monument at Wittenberg.No. 428 Song Arrangement - I'd rather have Jesus (Peter Kim)Bandmaster Peter Kim from the USA Central Territory presents an arrangement of the popular gospel song, 'I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold.' The lyrics were written by Rhea F. Miller in 1922 and have proved popular with many Christian denominations ever since.No. 429 Bound for Glory (Ian Feltwell)The song 'I'm a soldier bound for glory' was first published in 1922, is a great Salvation Army song of testimony and still remains a firm favourite today.

Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognised as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers that had been previously considered lost was found in her abandoned summer home. Amongst these was this delightful work, Adoration, which had been composed in the 1950s for organ. According to IMSLP.org, the piece "failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no 'restoration' under the GATT amendments" and therefore is in the public domain. A version for violin and piano by Elaine Fine has become popular. This setting for cornet soloist with brass band has been arranged by Andrew Wainwright. When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available for band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. Kiwi Dragon - Matthew Hall
'Kiwi Dragon' was commissioned by Byron 'Buzz' Newton for his Master's final performance recital at The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2012, a recital in which he was awarded an unprecedented 100%. Buzz travelled to Cardiff, Wales for his Master's degree course and became a member of Tredegar Town Band during his studies. 'Kiwi Dragon's' inception came from an initial conversation with the soloist where the thought of combining traditional Welsh folk music with that of Buzz's native New Zealand folk songs to create a virtuosic finishing piece for the recital was conceived. Originally scored for solo euphonium, 10-piece brass and percussion, 'Kiwi Dragon' includes the traditional New Zealand folk melodies Pokare Ana and Tarakihi and the Welsh folk melody Myfanwy, combined with the national anthems of both New Zealand and Wales in the pieces' culmination.

Both serve as a powerful reminder of the resurrection of Jesus.1368: Horn Solo - O how much he cared for me (Keith Wilkinson)This solo was originally penned for Bandsman Frank Taylor, who plays Solo Horn at Stapleford Citadel Corps. As its basis, it uses the popular hymn No one ever cared for me like Jesus by Charles F. Weigle, a Baptist evangelist who wrote more than a thousand hymns.1369: My Redeemer lives (Olaf Ritman)This arrangement of Reuben Morgan's well-known worship song (S.A.S.B. 223) was first written as an accompaniment for congregational singing and can still be used in that way. It was inspired by the American R&B group Tower of Power and is meant to sound soulful and funky.1370: Selection - With life anew (Mervyn Clarke)This selection features music associated with two hymns; Blessd Saviour, now behold me (S.A.S.B. 575) by William Baugh and Breathe on me, breath of God (S.A.S.B. 294) by Edwin Hatch. Although Edwin Hatch's hymn-writing output was very small, this hymn has seen numerous settings and melodies associated with the words from which the piece takes its title; two of these melodies are featured here in Trentham and Carlisle.

These words of great assurance are married to a strong tune which, unlike many contemporary worship songs, suits the brass band idiom well. Although this piece will work without Percussion, the Snare Drum part, which underpins a lot of the piece, will help drive the music forward.2243: The wonders of thy grace (Norman Bearcroft)Herbert Booth's song Within my heart, O Lord, fulfil (S.A.S.B. 211) was the inspiration behind Lieut-Colonel Norman Bearcroft's three-verse setting of the hymn tune Wareham, with the title being taken from the lyrics of verse two.2244: Trombone Solo - I will wait (Andrew Mackereth)Major Leonard Ballantine has an astonishing gift for contemporary song writing. This song is a brilliant example of this, taking the idea of Jesus waiting patiently for us to accept the fullness of his offer of love.This arrangement was made at the request of Andrew Justice, former Principal Trombonist of The International Staff Band. For many years, Andrew has used this song with piano accompaniment. In making this arrangement, the composers aim was to capture the transparency you can create in piano playing.2245: The battle cry! (David Edmonds)Inspired by Lorne Barry's Trinity (F.S. 599), this piece would be well suited as a concert opener but would work in many settings as a contribution to worship. Its main feature is the driving rhythmic pattern in the Bass and Percussion sections. The music needs to be played with confidence and purpose. As the title suggests, it is a strong, inspiring battle cry, corralling the troops. This is a setting of the song by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty, O Church, arise (S.A.S.B. 819), which has become popular in recent years, not only within The Salvation Army, but also the wider Christian church.

1359: Festival March - Coastal Celebration (Sam Creamer)Coastal Celebration was commissioned in 2019 by Nambour Salvation Army Band for the Corps' 125th anniversary celebrations. Nambour was the birthplace of The Salvation Army's work on the Beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Firring with this theme are subtle tributes to iconic Sunshine Coast landmarks, referenced with small phrases of popular secular melodies intertwined with the main tunes What a faithful God (S.A.S.B. 378) and All through the years (S.A.S.B. 826).1360: He's always been faithful (Craig Woodland)This meditative selection is an arrangement of the song by American singer and record producer Sara, Groves, He's always been faithful. The words express the joy and thankfulness in having a relationship with Jesus and knowing his presence in life. The melody and motifs of the traditional hymn, Great is thy faithfulness (S.A.S.B. 26), are heard throughout.1361: Christ's living water (Dean Jones)Christ's sacrificial love has been beautifully portrayed through the imagery of water in many songs, none more so that the skilfully crafted words we find in the chorus of I know a fount (S.A.S.B. 197), written by Oliver Cooke. To enhance the sentiments expressed, the pure sounds derived from Handel's Water Music fit perfectly in terms of music and imagery.1362: March - Fear Not! (Avelan Ntsiete)The Salvation Army continues to proclaim its music ministry in all corners of the world and, with this item under review, we introduce a new composer, originally from Congo Brazzaville, Central Africa. Avelan Ntsiete is currently a Bandsman at the Lilas Corps in Paris but has previously served in the Congo Brazzaville Territorial Band. This march, in traditional format, was written for an evangelistic campaign in Kindamba, where civil war has brought upheaval to the area and uncertainty for the local Salvationists. The composer was part of a small brass group which travelled for over 24 hours by truck and on foot to reach Kindamba and bring encouragement to the Salvationists within that community.
