No. 410 March - Go Forth! (Paul Drury)This march was written as a tribute to Bandmaster Jack Spowart and the Bo'ness Salvation Army Band. The composer lives in the twon of Bo'ness and has had numerous opportunities to share with the band and the wider corps at various events. This march serves as recognition of the faithful service given in the Lord's name in the town by The Salvation Army for over 100 years. Two tunes are featured, both well-known and instantly recognisable, namely, Forward! be our watchword and We're marching on.No.411 (1) O give thanks (Marian Parker)The composer, Marian Parker, is a new contributor and is the Recruiting Sergeant at Leicester South Corps. This simple, yet rhythmic piece should not pose any technical problems for most bands and features the attractive arrangement of Joanne Pond's contemporary song, 'O give thanks'.No.411 (2) Hymn Tune Arrangement - St Michael (David Rowsell)The hymn tune 'St Michael' was composed in 1551 by French composer Louis Bourgeois and the composer provides a very useful arrangement of this historic hymn.No. 412 Precious Lord, take my hand (Erik Silfverberg O.F.)This well-known Gospel Song is a favourite of many. It has been recorded by many great artists, including Rosetta Tharpe, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. The words were written by Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey, who is often known as the 'Father of Gospel song'.No. 413 Search Me (Gavin Whitehouse)The second new contributor to this journal is Gavin Whitehouse. gavin is the Assistant Music Director for the Greater New York Division and is also the USA Eastern Territorial Songster Leader. This piece combines two songs - one old and one new - which speak of a God who knows us intimately. 'Search me, O God and know my heart today' (associated with the beautiful Maori melody, 'Now is the hour') is woven with a contemporary setting of Psalm 139 by Rebecca St James, the first line of which says, 'You searchme, you know me'.

Paradise City - Guns'n' Roses - Haakon Esplo
Paradise City is one of the most famous songs from the band Guns N 'Roses, recorded on the Appetite for Destruction album. It was released as single in 1988 and may contain the most famous guitar riff from Guns N 'Roses played by Slash. The lyrics expresses a desire to come home to a place referred to as "Paradise City". If you want a real rock song on your next concert, this arrangement is a great choice with challenges for all groups and the opportunity to really hit loose.

DescriptionLuigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, into a musical family. His father, a cellist and double-bass player, sent him to study in Rome at a young age. In 1757 they both went to Vienna, where the court employed them as musicians in the Burgtheater. In 1761 Boccherini went to Madrid, entering the employ of Prince Luis Antonio of Spain, younger brother of King Charles III. There he flourished under royal patronage, until one day when the King expressed his disapproval at a passage in a new trio, and ordered Boccherini to change it. The composer, no doubt irritated with this intrusion into his art, doubled the passage instead, which led to his immediate dismissal. Then he accompanied Don Luis to Arenas de San Pedro, a little town in the Gredos mountains, where Boccherini wrote many of his most famous works. Although neglected after his death and throughout the 19th and early 20th century (he was known mockingly as 'Haydn's Wife' for a time), Boccherini's music has been rediscovered in recent decades.La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid('Night Music of the Streets of Madrid') is a string quintet of seven short movements composed during Boccherini's exile in Arenas, no doubt to remind him and his prince of happier times. The music is reminiscent of "the gaiety and bustle of Spain's capital, recalling the sound of the city's church bells ringing for evening prayer, the popular dances that were the delight of its young people, and the blind beggars singing their typical songs". This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour. £36.27Men of Harlech (Brass Band) Welsh Traditional arr. Alex McGee
This contemporary take by Alex McGee on the Welsh folk song Men of Harlech will be an entertaining addition to concert programmes. The arranger writes: 'Men of Harlech is perhaps one of the most well known of all traditional Welsh folk songs, but not like this. This setting was inspired by a composer who I first encountered as a 14-year-old playing in his first regional brass band, Gareth Wood. Upon learning of the death of Gareth I felt compelled to honour his memory and his music in composition. I struck upon the idea to do what he had done to the tune Sosban Fach to Men of Harlech, to take the tune as the raw material and try to craft it into something new yet recognisable, modern yet accessible. The work attempts to highlight what for me are the underlying characteristics of we Welsh; prone to melancholy but quick to find joy, contradictory, inviting, welcoming and warm but capable of housing a fierce streak of nationalistic pride. I dedicate this work to Gareth Wood and thank him for his music.'
